Blog Tour: Spindle by E.K. Johnson

ABOUT SPINDLE:
The world is made safe by a woman...but it is a very big world.

It has been generations since the Storyteller Queen drove the demon out of her husband and saved her country from fire and blood. Her family has prospered beyond the borders of their village, and two new kingdoms have sprouted on either side of the mountains where the demons are kept prisoner by bright iron, and by the creatures the Storyteller Queen made to keep them contained.

But the prison is crumbling. Through years of careful manipulation, a demon has regained her power. She has made one kingdom strong and brought the other to its knees, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When a princess is born, the demon is ready with the final blow: a curse that will cost the princess her very soul, or force her to destroy her own people to save her life.

The threads of magic are tightly spun, binding princess and exiled spinners into a desperate plot to break the curse before the demon can become a queen of men. But the web of power is dangerously tangled--and they may not see the true pattern until it is unspooled.

ABOUT E.K. JOHNSTON:

E.K. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Well, that and how to muscle through awkward fanfic because it’s about a pairing she likes.
Her books range from contemporary fantasy (The Story of Owen, Prairie Fire), to fairy-tale reimaginings (A Thousand Nights, Spindle), and from small town Ontario (Exit, Pursued By A Bear), to a galaxy far, far away (Star Wars: Ahsoka). She has no plans to rein anything in.
You can follow Kate on Twitter (@ek_johnston) to learn more about Alderaanian political theory than you really need to know, or on Tumblr (ekjohnston) and Instagram (ek_johnston) if you're just here for pretty pictures.

About FIRE IN YOU (Standalone Contemporary Romance Releasing November 28, 2016):
fire-in-you-coverFrom the # 1 New York Times and International bestselling author comes a richly moving story about heartbreak and guilt, second chances and hope. Full of familiar, fan-favorite characters and no two people more deserving of a happy ending, Fire In You will burn bright beyond the last page…

Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.
She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. And when he sees Jillian, he’s no longer capable of thinking of her as the little girl who was his shadow growing up or the daughter of the man who gave him a second chance at life. He sees the woman who’d always been there for him, the one person who believed in him no matter what.
Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.

Mini Review:
As always Jennifer L. Armentrout proves she is one of my all-time favorite authors. Her quick wit and vivacious characters are some of my favorite to read and that holds extra true for FIRE IN YOU. Y'all there is definitely some fire in this book.

Seriously, fans of the Wait For You series don't need to be told of the smexy and snarky goldmine that is this series. If you haven't checked it out, get in now! This book can absolutely be read as a standalone, but I'm guessing you'll be scrambling to start from book 1 before you make it out of the first chapter.

Blog Tour: Of Fire and Stars

Fast 5 with Audrey Coulthurst

Last book you read: I just finished reading Relative Strangers (Candlewick, 2018) by my dear friend and critique partner, Paula Garner. It’s about a teen girl who finds out she spent part of her early childhood in foster care when her mom was struggling with addiction. She sets out to find the family that cared for her and ends up falling for her former foster brother. I love the voice in the book—the main character, Jules, is so wry and loves food as much as I do. One of the best parts of being an author is getting to read other authors’ work before it comes out.

Last trip you took: Austin, Texas. I used to live there and still travel there a lot for work, but on my last trip I was there for the Texas Teen Book Festival. Hanging out with other authors is always a good time!

Favorite bookish moment:  Meeting Mercedes Lackey earlier this year. Her books were a huge part of my life as a teen, so getting to meet her as an adult and an author was surreal. She was fun to talk to, incredibly kind, and then at the end of our conversation told me she’d just finished reading my book and had enjoyed it. I almost fainted on the spot. I wish I could go back and tell 13-year-old me that one day her favorite author would blurb a book she wrote.

Last thing you treated yourself to: Sushi! There is an amazing sushi place close to my work, so sometimes when I have a hard day I’ll take myself to lunch there. I always leave feeling more cheerful.

Last emoticon you used: I’d like to pretend I’m classy and say a regular smiley face, but it was probably poop, the scream face, or a tongue sticking out.

ABOUT OF FIRE AND STARS:
Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile lands. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a kingdom where magic is forbidden.

Now, Denna must learn the ways of her new home while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine (called Mare), sister of her betrothed.

When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, each discovers there’s more to the other than she thought. Mare is surprised by Denna’s intelligence and bravery, while Denna is drawn to Mare’s independent streak. Soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.

But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other

Fate of Flames Blog Tour

Fast 5 with Sarah Raughley:

Last book you read: The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I actually had to teach it since I’m a teacher right now for African-American Women’s Writers so I re-read it. I recommend it to anyone out there willing to learn and grow, it can be soul-crushing, but incredibly powering. Can’t say it’s better than the movie though because I’ve never seen it!

Last thing that made you smile: Solidarity on twitter among marginalized communities. This is really important now more than ever, I think, with everything going on. People need to know that they matter, but this world often tells us the complete opposite. But if we uplift each other and support each other, we can transform the world for the better. I truly believe that.

Favorite memory: Going on long car trips with my whole family as a kid. Actually, in the second chapter of Fate of Flames Maia recounts a special memory she has travelling with her family and that derived from my own personal experiences (uh, without the monsters). When I lived in Timmins, Ontario, long trips to Toronto were seriously so epic and adventurous to the seven year old me!
Favorite bookish moment: Reading book 1 of Harry Potter as a kid for the first time and being mind-blown and near tears after I was done. Harry Potter has really inspired me and encouraged me to be a fantasy writer. Honestly, thank goodness for that series!
Best moment as an author: Having some PM me about how much my book meant to them! Something I truly can’t forget.

ABOUT FATE OF FLAMES:
Four girls with the power to control the elements and save the world from a terrible evil must come together in the first epic novel in a brand-new series.

When Phantoms—massive beasts made from nightmares and darkness—suddenly appeared and began terrorizing the world, four girls, the Effigies, each gained a unique power to control one of the classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Since then, four girls across the world have continually fought against the Phantoms, fulfilling their cosmic duty. And when one Effigy dies, another girl gains her power as a replacement.

But now, with technologies in place to protect the world’s major cities from Phantom attacks, the Effigies have stopped defending humanity and, instead, have become international celebrities, with their heroic feats ranked, televised, and talked about in online fandoms.

Until the day that New York City’s protection against the Phantoms fails, a man seems to be able to control them by sheer force of will, and Maia, a high school student, unexpectedly becomes the Fire Effigy.

Now Maia has been thrown into battle with three girls who want nothing to do with one another. But with the first human villain that the girls have ever faced, and an army of Phantoms preparing for attack, there isn’t much time for the Effigies to learn how to work together.

Can the girls take control of their destinies before the world is destroyed forever?

ABOUT SARAH RAUGHLEY:

Sarah Raughley grew up in Southern Ontario writing stories about freakish little girls with powers because she secretly wanted to be one. She is a huge fangirl of anything from manga to SF/F TV to Japanese Role Playing Games, but she will swear up and down that she was inspired by ~Jane Austin~ at book signings. On top of being a YA Writer, she is currently completing a PhD in English, because the sight of blood makes her queasy (which crossed Medical School off the list).

She is represented by The Bradford Literary Agency.

So far, you can also find her on Twitter, where work ethic goes to die.

Fast 5 with Ashley Elston

Fast 5 with Ashley Elston:

Last thing that made you cry: The onions I was cutting up for fajitas last night. They get me every time.

Favorite quote: “To the stars who listen – and the dreams that are answered.” A Court of Mist and Fury. I just really love this quote.

Best moment as an author: When I received my first letter from a reader. She told me she didn’t like to read until she read my book. It was an amazing feeling knowing that my book did that for her.

Last person you hugged: My youngest son, Archer. He’s eight and therefore still thinks I’m somewhat cool. My older two boys keep dodging me.

Last emoticon you used: The eye rolling one. It sums up so much.
ABOUT THIS IS OUR STORY:
No one knows what happened that morning at River Point. Five boys went hunting. Four came back. The boys won’t say who fired the shot that killed their friend; the evidence shows it could have been any one of them.

Kate Marino’s senior year internship at the District Attorney’s Office isn’t exactly glamorous—more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen. The River Point Boys are all anyone can talk about. Despite their damning toxicology reports the morning of the accident, the DA wants the boys’ case swept under the rug. He owes his political office to their powerful families.

Kate won’t let that happen. Digging up secrets without revealing her own is a dangerous line to walk; Kate has her own reasons for seeking justice for Grant. As she and Stone investigate—the ageing prosecutor relying on Kate to see and hear what he cannot—she realizes that nothing about the case—or the boys—is what it seems. Grant wasn’t who she thought he was, and neither is Stone’s prime suspect. As Kate gets dangerously close to the truth, it becomes clear that the early morning accident might not have been an accident at all—and if Kate doesn’t uncover the true killer, more than one life could be on the line…including her own.
