Fate of Flames Blog Tour

Fast 5 with Sarah Raughley:

Last book you read: The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I actually had to teach it since I’m a teacher right now for African-American Women’s Writers so I re-read it. I recommend it to anyone out there willing to learn and grow, it can be soul-crushing, but incredibly powering. Can’t say it’s better than the movie though because I’ve never seen it!

Last thing that made you smile: Solidarity on twitter among marginalized communities. This is really important now more than ever, I think, with everything going on. People need to know that they matter, but this world often tells us the complete opposite. But if we uplift each other and support each other, we can transform the world for the better. I truly believe that.

Favorite memory: Going on long car trips with my whole family as a kid. Actually, in the second chapter of Fate of Flames Maia recounts a special memory she has travelling with her family and that derived from my own personal experiences (uh, without the monsters). When I lived in Timmins, Ontario, long trips to Toronto were seriously so epic and adventurous to the seven year old me!
Favorite bookish moment: Reading book 1 of Harry Potter as a kid for the first time and being mind-blown and near tears after I was done. Harry Potter has really inspired me and encouraged me to be a fantasy writer. Honestly, thank goodness for that series!
Best moment as an author: Having some PM me about how much my book meant to them! Something I truly can’t forget.

ABOUT FATE OF FLAMES:
Four girls with the power to control the elements and save the world from a terrible evil must come together in the first epic novel in a brand-new series.

When Phantoms—massive beasts made from nightmares and darkness—suddenly appeared and began terrorizing the world, four girls, the Effigies, each gained a unique power to control one of the classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Since then, four girls across the world have continually fought against the Phantoms, fulfilling their cosmic duty. And when one Effigy dies, another girl gains her power as a replacement.

But now, with technologies in place to protect the world’s major cities from Phantom attacks, the Effigies have stopped defending humanity and, instead, have become international celebrities, with their heroic feats ranked, televised, and talked about in online fandoms.

Until the day that New York City’s protection against the Phantoms fails, a man seems to be able to control them by sheer force of will, and Maia, a high school student, unexpectedly becomes the Fire Effigy.

Now Maia has been thrown into battle with three girls who want nothing to do with one another. But with the first human villain that the girls have ever faced, and an army of Phantoms preparing for attack, there isn’t much time for the Effigies to learn how to work together.

Can the girls take control of their destinies before the world is destroyed forever?

ABOUT SARAH RAUGHLEY:

Sarah Raughley grew up in Southern Ontario writing stories about freakish little girls with powers because she secretly wanted to be one. She is a huge fangirl of anything from manga to SF/F TV to Japanese Role Playing Games, but she will swear up and down that she was inspired by ~Jane Austin~ at book signings. On top of being a YA Writer, she is currently completing a PhD in English, because the sight of blood makes her queasy (which crossed Medical School off the list).

She is represented by The Bradford Literary Agency.

So far, you can also find her on Twitter, where work ethic goes to die.

Fast 5 with Ashley Elston

Fast 5 with Ashley Elston:

Last thing that made you cry: The onions I was cutting up for fajitas last night. They get me every time.

Favorite quote: “To the stars who listen – and the dreams that are answered.” A Court of Mist and Fury. I just really love this quote.

Best moment as an author: When I received my first letter from a reader. She told me she didn’t like to read until she read my book. It was an amazing feeling knowing that my book did that for her.

Last person you hugged: My youngest son, Archer. He’s eight and therefore still thinks I’m somewhat cool. My older two boys keep dodging me.

Last emoticon you used: The eye rolling one. It sums up so much.
ABOUT THIS IS OUR STORY:
No one knows what happened that morning at River Point. Five boys went hunting. Four came back. The boys won’t say who fired the shot that killed their friend; the evidence shows it could have been any one of them.

Kate Marino’s senior year internship at the District Attorney’s Office isn’t exactly glamorous—more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen. The River Point Boys are all anyone can talk about. Despite their damning toxicology reports the morning of the accident, the DA wants the boys’ case swept under the rug. He owes his political office to their powerful families.

Kate won’t let that happen. Digging up secrets without revealing her own is a dangerous line to walk; Kate has her own reasons for seeking justice for Grant. As she and Stone investigate—the ageing prosecutor relying on Kate to see and hear what he cannot—she realizes that nothing about the case—or the boys—is what it seems. Grant wasn’t who she thought he was, and neither is Stone’s prime suspect. As Kate gets dangerously close to the truth, it becomes clear that the early morning accident might not have been an accident at all—and if Kate doesn’t uncover the true killer, more than one life could be on the line…including her own.

Review: Die For You by Amy Fellner Dominy

Review:
Ah, teenage love. The intensity, the newness, the obsessive way it takes over your life. This powerful and chilling tale of love gone wrong will haunt you for weeks to come after you close the cover.

What starts as a sweet romance slowly, horrifyingly turns bad when Emma and Dillon collide. Watching Dillon slowly become darker and more obsessive, more abusive is horrifying, but Amy Fellner Dominy does a beautiful job of show how organic and natural something that seems so right can twist into something so, so wrong.

DIE FOR YOU is that book you want teens to read. You want them to see how easy it is to be blinded by the stars in your eyes. 1 in 11 students report being physically harmed by their date (KidsHealth.org). This isn't a problem that's going away, but it is one that needs to be discussed more.

This was my first book by Amy Fellner Dominy and it won't be my last. I love the way she tells a story, letting the characters carry the bulk of the book and keeping the reader hooked from start to finish.

ABOUT DIE FOR YOU:
Theirs was the perfect love story.

After Emma Lorde’s parents’ divorce forces her to move halfway across the state of Arizona to live with her father, Emma must face her senior year in a new school knowing absolutely no one.

Then she meets Dillon Hobbs and something just clicks.

Dillon introduces Emma to friends she can call her own. He provides a refuge from the chaos of her past and the security of a commitment that he promises will last forever. And because circumstances of her messy life forced Emma to put aside her dream of pursuing archaeology, Dillon creates a blueprint for a future together.
He saves her, over and over, by loving her more than she thought anyone ever would.

But just when everything seems picture-perfect, Emma is offered an opportunity that will upend the future they’ve planned. Uncertainty grows, and fear spirals into something darker.

Now Dillon is the one who needs saving.

But how much do you sacrifice for the one you love? What if saving Dillon means losing herself?

Blog Tour: The Rift Uprising

FAST 5 WITH AMY FOSTER

Last book you read:

The last book I read was My Lady Jane. I thought it was fantastic. I loved how three authors got together (there is power in numbers!) and combined their strength and fan base which was smart and effective on about a thousand levels. I love it when women work together. I particularly enjoyed how they changed the conflict from Catholic Vs. Protestant to Verity Vs. Edian (people who can change into animals and people who can’t.) Also it was really funny!

Last thing that made you cry:

Honestly the last thing that made me cry was yesterday when I was watching my favorite all time episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. The episode is called Inner Light. I make no excuses for my nerdiness…It’s actually a near perfect piece of science fiction.

Last trip you took:

The last trip I took was to Massachusetts. I went to Cape Cod for my In Laws 50th wedding anniversary. It was fun. But, what was REALLY FUN was the little romantic getaway my husband and I took to Salem.  All I’m gonna say about that is Hauswitch- look em up online and get your Witch on.

       My favorite quote(s) are:

This is the beginning of a new day. you have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have to leave behind. Let it be something good.

I also like “You can’t do epic shit with basic people” but I have no idea who said that one!

Best moment as an author:

My best moment as an author was the 2009 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Author’s Feast. My debut novel, When Autumn Leaves was about to come out and I finally got to hold the Advanced Reader Copy for the first time.  Seeing my name on an actual book was such a thrill! And the dinner itself was really special because it was with all the independent bookstore owners. They treated us authors like rock stars. It was amazing.

MORE ABOUT THE RIFT UPRISING
Normal seventeen-year-old girls go to high school, binge watch TV shows all weekend, and flirt with everyone on the face of the Earth. But Ryn Whitaker is trying to save it.

Ryn is a Citadel. A soldier. A liar. Ryn and her fellow Citadels were specially chosen and trained to guard a Rift—one of fourteen unpredictable tears in the fabric of the universe that serve as doorways to alternate Earths. Unbeknownst to her family, Ryn leaves for school each day and then reports for duty as an elite, cybernetically-altered soldier who can run faster, jump farther, and fight better than a Navy SEAL—which comes in handy when she’s not sure if axe-wielding Vikings or any number of other terrified and often dangerous beings come through the Rift. A fine-tuned weapon, Ryn is a picture-perfect Citadel. But that’s all about to change.

When a young man named Ezra is pulled through the Rift, Ryn finds herself immediately drawn to him, despite her training. What starts as a physical attraction quickly grows deeper, and Ezra’s curiosity throws Ryn off balance when he starts questioning the Rifts, the mysterious organization that oversees them, and the Citadels themselves—questions that lead Ryn to wonder if the lies she’s been telling her family are just the surface of a much bigger lie told to her. As Ryn and Ezra desperately try to get to that truth, they discover that each revelation blurs the line between the villains and the heroes even more.

Blog Tour: A Darkly Beating Heart by Lindsey Smith

Best moment as an author:
Every time I get to meet readers. I know readers get nervous about it, but trust me, I’m way more nervous and excited to meet you!

Last thing that made you cry:
Oh, lord, do I cry over dumb things (and NOT over the huge things, weirdly). I don’t remember the exact order, but in the past week, I’ve cried about A Darkly Beating Heart’s release, an animal rescue foundation’s Facebook feed, Captain America, a sweet two-sentence email from a reader, a DIFFERENT animal rescue foundation’s Facebook feed (why do I even…), and a post-important-meeting stress dump. The meeting even went well! I just had a lot of emotions that had to go somewhere!
Last thing you treated yourself to:
New fall boots. I think I do this every fall. It’s my favorite time of year!

Favorite place in the world:
Anywhere cloudy and forested. Possibly in the mountains. My brain lives permanently in Scotland or Norway or the mountainous regions of Japan.
Favorite quote:
“Bitches get stuff done.” Okay, maybe not, like, my favorite quote in the totality of the human experience, but it’s definitely a good motto! Kindness is important, but I’m never going to be quiet and polite just to keep the peace when there’s important work to be done. I think women especially have trouble pushing past our fear of getting labeled a bitch when we’re pursuing our goals. I’ve gotten better about it but still have to remind myself a lot. (Can you tell I’m Slytherin?)
ABOUT A DARKLY BEATING HEART:
A troubled girl confronts her personal demons in this time-travel thriller alternating between present day and 19th century Japan.

No one knows how to handle Reiko. She is full of hatred; all she can think about is how to best hurt herself and those people closest to her. After a failed suicide attempt at her home in Seattle, Reiko's parents send her to spend the summer with family in Japan, hoping she will learn to control her emotions. But while visiting Kuramagi, a historic village preserved to reflect the nineteenth-century Edo period, Reiko finds herself slipping backward in time into the nineteenth-century life of Miyu, a young woman even more vengeful than Reiko herself. Reiko loves escaping into Miyu's life . . . until she discovers Kuramagi's dark secret and must face down Miyu's demons as well as her own.
