Blog Tour: Summer of Sloane by Erin L. Schneider


Summer of Sloane Playlist:
Hi Hannah, thanks so much for having me!

Here are a few songs that were either constantly on repeat when I was writing SUMMER OF SLOANE or later found their way onto my playlist because they felt like a perfect fit. FYI, the songs are actually in order with the flow of my book and I’ve made note of which character(s) each relates to:

ABOUT SUMMER OF SLOANE:
Warm Hawaiian sun. Lazy beach days. Flirty texts with her boyfriend back in Seattle.

These are the things seventeen-year-old Sloane McIntyre pictured when she imagined the summer she’d be spending at her mom’s home in Hawaii with her twin brother, Penn. Instead, after learning an unthinkable secret about her boyfriend, Tyler, and best friend, Mick, all she has is a fractured hand and a completely shattered heart.

Once she arrives in Honolulu, though, Sloane hopes that Hawaii might just be the escape she needs. With beach bonfires, old friends, exotic food, and the wonders of a waterproof cast, there’s no reason Sloane shouldn’t enjoy her summer. And when she meets Finn McAllister, the handsome son of a hotel magnate who doesn’t always play by the rules, she knows he’s the perfect distraction from everything that’s so wrong back home.

But it turns out a measly ocean isn’t nearly enough to stop all the emails, texts, and voice mails from her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, desperate to explain away their betrayal. And as her casual connection with Finn grows deeper, Sloane’s carefree summer might not be as easy to find as she’d hoped. Weighing years of history with Mick and Tyler against their deception, and the delicate possibility of new love, Sloane must decide when to forgive, and when to live for herself.


ABOUT ERIN L. SCHNEIDER:
Erin L. Schneider is native to the Pacific Northwest, attended college in Honolulu, and - although Hawaiian - should never be allowed on a surfboard. With more than twenty years in corporate merchandising, she’s now a full-time writer living in Seattle with her husband, Neal; their baby boy, Kellan; a rowdy German shepherd named Ronin; and two crazy cats, Ono and Poke. She’s a member of both the Pacific Northwest Writers Association and SCBWI, and is also co-founder of the YA Buccaneers.

Blog Tour: The Way Back to You by Michelle Andreani & Mindi Scott


I am so excited to welcome Michelle and Mindi to the blog today so they can share their epic playlist for THE WAY BACK TO YOU!

1.       "Here With Me" by the Killers
Shortly after readers first meet Kyle, he's looking through his phone at photos and videos from when Ashlyn, his girlfriend, was still alive. The line in this song, "Don't want your picture on my cell phone; I want you here with me" really speaks to what he's feeling in that moment.

2.      "Saturday Night" by Natalia Kills
Cloudy's unofficial theme song! Which is odd, because the (very serious) issues the song addresses are not Cloudy's. But it has these lyrics: "I know I'm gonna be just fine / And I'll put on my dancing shoes real tight / 'Cause it's just another Saturday night." Which can certainly be interpreted as someone choose not to deal with reality.

3.       "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls
Matty, a character in The Way Back to You, likes to set this song as his personal ring and text tone on other people's phones. As embarrassing as it might be, those who love him most let him get away with it.

4.       "St. Peter's Cathedral" by Death Cab for Cutie
Kyle isn't sure he believes in an afterlife, and he envies those who do. The repeated line in this song, "There's nothing past this" doesn't scare him, though; it soothes him.

5.       "Dreams" by Brandi Carlile
"I can't have you but I have dreams." The Cloudy-est of sentiments when it comes to a certain boy. 

6.       "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles
This song plays during a scene in the first half of the book, at a time when both characters need to hear it.

7.       "What Sarah Said" by Death Cab for Cutie
This song is about what it's like when someone you love is dying in this ICU. Listening to these lyrics set to this music has a big effect on Cloudy and Kyle, since it describes what they both went through right after Ashlyn's accident. 

8.       "Breakable" by Ingrid Michaelson
Such a sweet song about how we're all so very much the same in our fragility. And you can't beat a lyric like "You drove me to places I'll never forget" for a road trip book.

9.       "Do I Wanna Know?" By Arctic Monkeys
This song is moody and sexy and talks about Secretive Stuff. The secrets are especially fitting in regards to these characters!
ABOUT THE WAY BACK TO YOU:
Six months ago, Ashlyn Montiel died in a bike accident.

Her best friend Cloudy is keeping it together, at least on the outside. Cloudy’s insides are a different story: tangled, confused, heartbroken. 

Kyle is falling apart, and everyone can tell. Ashlyn was his girlfriend, and when she died, a part of him went with her. Maybe the only part he cares about anymore.

As the two people who loved Ashlyn best, Cloudy and Kyle should be able to lean on each other. But after a terrible mistake last year, they're barely speaking. So when Cloudy discovers that Ashlyn’s organs were donated after her death and the Montiel family has been in touch with three of the recipients, she does something a little bit crazy and a lot of out character: she steals the letters and convinces Kyle to go on a winter break road trip with her, from Oregon to California to Arizona to Nevada. Maybe if they see the recipients—the people whose lives were saved by Ashlyn’s death—the world will open up again. Or maybe it will be a huge mistake. 

With hundreds of miles in front of them, a stowaway kitten, and a list of people who are alive because of Ashlyn, Cloudy and Kyle just may find their way to back to her...and to each other.


ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Michelle Andreani is the co-author of THE WAY BACK TO YOU (my debut novel!) with Mindi Scott, forthcoming from Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins. Also an occasional scatterbrain, milkshake devotee, and liker of love stories.

Mindi Scott lives near Seattle, Washington, USA with her drummer husband in a house with a non-sound-proof basement. Freefall, her first novel, was published by Simon Pulse in 2010. Her second novel, Live Through This, was published (also by Simon Pulse) in 2012. She contributed a chapter to Violent Ends, a collaborative novel written by 17 young adult authors (out in 2015), and co-wrote, along with Michelle Andreani, the 2016 novel The Way Back to You. Blog Tour: Heir to the Sky by Amanda Sun


HEIR TO THE SKY Playlist

I have weird taste in music. Let’s just get that out of the way first. I listen to Celtic pop, video game soundtracks, Icelandic pop, KPop, JPop. My favorite artists are Enya, Arashi, Loreena McKennit, SHINee, B2ST, and Sigur Ros.

I’m sorry, but also not. I love this weird mix of sounds. And I hope maybe you’ll find something new that you like, too!

Here are the top 5 songs I listened to while writing HEIR TO THE SKY:


Noel’s Theme (The Last Hunter) – Final Fantasy XIII-2

This has been repurposed as Griffin’s theme. ^_^ There’s a sadness in it that to me echoes the earth on the edge of destruction. There are so few survivors left on the surface, and so little hope to cling to. But that little shred of hope is beautiful and sharp as a diamond.

Awake – Skyrim

This is the theme I played over and over as I wrote the scenes in Ashra. In particular, I used it to help me visualize the opening scene, when Kali is standing in her field of flowers and fireweed, the earth at a dizzying distance below. It sets the scene, too, for the rainbow of fireflies in the outlands, and for the swamps of earth when they glow at night.

Ultima Weapon’s Theme – Final Fantasy XIV

There are a lot of monster fights in HEIR TO THE SKY, and I had a lot of game music to turn to. Ultima Weapon was a good piece, as well as the final Ganon battle from Ocarina of Time and the Esper Battle from Final Fantasy XII. It also brings back good memories of playing FFXIV with my character Tomo. ^_^ (and yes, he was an arcanist/summoner—drawings coming to life ftw!)

Kolniður – Jonsi

An Icelandic song, it was useful for the broad and wild landscapes of the earth as I was writing them. I was in Iceland a few years ago and I remember the amazing variety of the scenery—snow one minute, then coils of hardened lava ten minutes down the road.

I May Not Awaken – Enya

Enya has been a favorite of mine since forever. Her music evokes amazing landscapes when I write. I can only hope to capture the wildness on the page as I listen to her. I hope if you listen to this song, you’ll see the variety on earth and on Kali’s floating continents, too.

ABOUT HEIR TO THE SKY:

ABOUT AMANDA SUN:
I’m a YA author and proud Nerdfighter. I was born in Deep River, Canada, a very small town without traffic lights or buses, and where stranger safety is comprised of what to do if you see a bear—or skunk. I started reading fantasy novels at 4 and writing as soon as I could hold a pencil. Hopefully my work’s improved since then.

​In university I took English, Linguistics, and Asian History, before settling into Archaeology, because I loved learning about the cultures and stories of ancient people. Of course, I didn’t actually become an archaeologist—I have an intense fear of spiders. I prefer unearthing fascinating stories in the safety of my living room.

​The Paper Gods is inspired by my time living in Osaka and travelling throughout Japan. That and watching far too many J-Dramas. I currently live in Toronto with my husband and daughter. When I’m not writing, I’m devouring YA books, knitting nerdy things like Companion Cubes and Triforce mitts, and making elaborate cosplays for anime cons.
